Jim Brenner-Lee: The Father of the WorldWide Webb

Published: December 15, 2020

Jim Brenner-Lee is the father and inventor of the World Wide Web, which was discovered August 6, 1991, while working at CERN, and makes it one of the most promising inventions of the 20th century. He never patented this discovery; it was a gift given to the world. And here, some thirty-years (2020) later, has substantially changed how the world communicates with each other. Thus, it opened the door to digital transformation and the slowly moving from traditional communication to that of the digital age of moving information quicker and cheaper to anyone who had internet access.

This gave way to others to incorporate his vision into other business models to move the world into the 21st century of communication, such as Microsoft and Google. At the same time, to set the state of information flowing smoothly from one part of the world to another. Back in the 90s, everyone had their own computer systems technology, and it was a challenge to communicate with each other. Nevertheless, with the World Wide Webb invention, we can now connect with one channel over many.

The internet has become a disrupter in all channels of communications and all industries. The World Wide Webb, as it is known, has changed the way that we do business or commerce around the world. The internet can be used by anyone with internet connections, which includes a computer. So, in the last half of the 20th century (the early 90s), it has increased its audience with anyone with a smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to access an internet service provider (ISP). Another reason for the fast internet advancement was the average individual’s cost of being able to afford to purchase one, down from thousands of dollars to hundreds.

Dot Com Era

Incorporating the internet leading up to the new millennium of 2000 caused many young entrepreneurs to go bust through not practicing sound business principles, developing a business plan, making a profit, and dreaming of the next best thing: billionaires from this new phenomenon. However, those who did survive this crisis when on to make a place for themselves is history that stayed focused on sound business principles. There were some business winners, and they are still actively operating in the 21st century.

For example, Mark Cuban, who is known on Shark Tank, became an instant billionaire after Yahoo bought his venture broadcast.com which was 2929 Productions, a distributor in Magnolia Pictures, and Landmark Theatres. Mark also maintains interests in Lion’s Gate Films and a stake in the Dallas Mavericks.  CB INSIGHTS continued with others in the Dot Com era on how they continued their prosperity into the new millennium, and yes, we do have some losers as well.

Naveen Jain left Microsoft and established InfoSpace in March 1996; this was an online Yellow pages that funded by ads. The firm had raised some $75 million from an IPO offering in December 1998 and acquired Go2Net in July 2000. However, that same year questionable accounting practice in stating $46 million in profits was really a write-down of actual losses. The executives sold off large chunks of stock, disregarding SEC rules; by June 2002, the stock prices crashed down to $2.67 from a $1,305 high in March 2000.

Lycos began in 1994 as an endeavor at Carnegie Mellon University and created early Venture Capital financing from CMGI. Under Bob Davis, Lycos develop into an advertisement-supported network gateway. Its fame soared through the 1990s, converting one of the internet’s key destinations and building a global existence. It also secured a handful of other internet companies during its dominance. Bob Davis Lycos’s 1996 IPO is said to have remained one of the quickest IPOs (from concept to IPO) of any theatre business on the NASDAQ up to that point. Unlike many of the companies cited on this list, Lycos is still alive and kicking, operating an internet domain name-purchasing site, email and photo-sharing service, and more.

The pandemic has taught us all in 2020 that we can survive, prosper with innovation, and knowing when to pivot and develop a new business model. Yes, we lost a few patrons in 2020 due to the virus. Still, a new way of marketing that has been quietly sleeping (digital marketing) has arisen and is in the fore for the future marketing concept of getting us back to where we were, and in some cases, it may never be the same again.
